Perhaps the reason why we haven’t advanced to a 3D-environment internet is because we’re stuck using outdated output devices. Besides getting thinner and higher resolution over the years, not much has changed in computer monitors. They are still flat screens sitting a foot or two from your eyes, and two-dimensional.
They say that if the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Similarly, if the only tool you have is a standard flat computer monitor, every problem looks like a two-dimensional problem.
I propose an immersive domed computer screen. The concept is like what you see at a planetarium, but scaled down to a personal scale.
With an immersive domed computer setup, your workspace is all around you. You can write a document in front of you, close it, then move it to a virtual shelf behind you. Then you can pull a virtual book from the virtual shelf behind you, and put it to the side of your desk for later reading. Then you can open a 3D web browser and explore 3D virtual environment web pages where you can walk around and look all around you, just like you do in a video game. Or you can just play a video game, which would be an awesome experience with a high-resolution domed monitor. And you can also have true surround-sound, with speakers arranged around your head.
An immersive domed computer can be set up like a kiosk at the center of your office. You can get in and out of the computer seat by ducking under the dome. Or maybe the dome can have a door on the side that flips up, allowing you to easily get in and out of your seat without worrying about bumping your head.
