If you can spin a turbine, you can generate electricity. Conversely, anything that spins can be harnessed for electricity. That’s spinning windmills. Spinning water wheels. Spin class.
Wait, what? Spin class?
Yes, those spinning wheels on your stationary bike can be used to harness electricity.
What if you could power an entire gym purely by the people exercising within it? A quick search shows that this is not actually a new idea. Apparently, a gym in Congresbury, United Kingdom became the world’s first self-powering gym back in 2013. Other gyms since then have harnessed power from their exercise machines for electricity.
One idea for makers of stationary bikes and other exercise equipment is to include an outlet on each machine for recharging your mobile devices using the power generated by your exercise. It could be a good motivation for people to use their phones less and exercise more. Imagine if you made a rule for yourself that you could only recharge your phone using your exercise equipment. I think in that case, you would never miss a workout!
