An Indian eatery called Tava Fry opened up near me a couple of years ago. I tried it once when they just opened, but I was a little turned off by their focus on brain, goat, and lamb dishes. I don’t mind people eating them, but it’s not my thing.
Last week when I was picking up a salad at the Potbelly Sandwich Shop next door, I saw a lot of people going in and out of Tava Fry and it smelled great. Earlier this week, I watched a documentary about the rise of the first internationally acclaimed Indian metal band, Bloodywood, and it was so good that I had tears of joy in my eyes by the end of it. So today, my brain put those two events together and gave me a craving for Indian food. I decided to give Tava Fry another chance.
Since the last time I went to Tava Fry when they just opened, they had changed their menu substantially. They still serve brains and goat and lamb, but there’s much less emphasis on those dishes. I opted for the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza, so I could take it home and share it with my family. I ordered it online, picked it up, and brought it home.
A curious surprise was that the pizza came with three packets of ketchup… Huh?
A quick search online revealed that people throughout southern Asia and the Middle East eat pizza with ketchup. I love trying new things, so I gave it a try. Not bad, but it didn’t impress me enough that I would do it with non-Indian pizzas.
When my kids came home from school, they were excited to try the Tikka Masala pizza and they loved it. None of them wanted to try it with ketchup, though.
Oh well.
