Far away from all the high-powered politics and traffic jams of Northern Virginia, the people of Southwest Virginia live a much simpler life. They pause to listen to the rustle of leaves or the murmur of a nearby stream. Days are spent with books, or tubing on the New River, or putting in long shifts at the local furniture factory.
I lived as a college student for eight years. I spent most of that time living on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was one of my favorite places to live, and I even considered staying after I graduated. But all the jobs are in Northern Virginia, so that’s where I ended up moving after college.
A few months before I graduated in 2005, my fiancee moved in with me in Blacksburg. I showed her around. I took her to the surrounding farms and to look at some of the best scenery Virginia has to offer.
